Painting Stucco

The day we sold the house I had begun painting the outside.  It was a project I had been putting off, but I decided to go ahead and begin.  A few hours after beginning – we got the call that the house had sold.  By then it was too late to go back so I had to move forward and finish the job.  It took me exactly 15 hours to prep, paint and clean up.  I have about 3 more hours of work left since the white trim has not yet been painted.  I also plan to paint the doors as well.  This is the first time I had ever painted a house, and I hope it is many years before I have to paint another one.

Before painting I did some research online to find out about painting exterior stucco.  Then I visited a neighbor down the street who happened to painting his house.  Between him and the Internet I found out the basics and set of to Home Depot to buy paint and supplies.   The process was easier than I anticipated, and had it not been for the heat it would have not been too bad.  I had recently power-washed the outside so that was one less step.  I had several cracks to fill in the stucco before painting, but the stucco filler only took about an hour to dry.  Next came applying the painter’s tape around widows, doors, and other edges.  Finally it was time to start painting.  At the end of each day it felt great to come inside, drink a large amount of Gatorade, take a shower, and collapse for a while.  This is my last project on the house – now its time to turn it over the next smuck who wants the responsibility of home-ownership.

  1. It looks brand new. I used to paint houses when I was a small child and I used a sombrero while I did it too.

  2. WOW! I LOVE the new color! I bet your new owners will be very pleased that you took care of this chore, I mean, project for them!

  3. It looks really good. I too just had my house covered in stucco and I too have had to paint it in 90+ degree heat. It really stinks. I mean, it really does with all the sweating and stuff.

  4. I feel like I’m watching one of those HGTV shows with the before and after photos. It looks good though.

  5. Nice.

Paints really can give that “thing” in your house to look newer and give the touch of elegance.
