Next Monday I am giving a seminar on playwright Eugene O’Neill for my Modern Theatre class at OU. I have read several O’Neill plays, and enjoyed everyone of them, with the exception of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. I hesitate to admit this since that play won O’Neill a Pulitzer. I simply found it to be a long day’s journey into night as I read it and it never seemed to end.
My seminar focuses on his last play titled “A Moon for the Misbegotten.” It is a great play, though he never saw it produced successfully during his lifetime. It first opened in 1947, and was a huge flop. It has since been on broadway and has been produced successfully several times. If you have never read an O’Neill play, might I suggest a few of my favorites for you to try:
The Hairy Ape, Ah Wilderness!, and A Moon for the Misbegotten. There are many other great ones, but these are some of my favorite picks.
