Forever Silenced

Mime great Marcel Marceau died in Paris. Many people make fun of the art of mime, and I never cared for it much when performed by street clowns. I do love the art form and have a great respect for those who can tell a story with no words. A few years ago, Erin and I had the opportunity to lead a drama workshop with one of Marceau’s former students. After the conference, we went to dinner and discussed his career and his experiences with Marcel Marceau. Before the event, we weren’t sure what to expect knowing that we would be working along-side a mime artist. We had our doubts, but found that he could create some beautiful moments on stage that we could never accomplish with the spoken word. After that weekend, we had an all-new respect for the art of mime.

Marcel Marceau will be remembered as one of the world’s greatest instigators of the art of mime in our era and will always be included in theatre history classes from now on.

One of my favorite quotes:

“Its good to shut up sometimes.” ~ Marcel Marceau

  1. I was rather heartbroken when I heard he died, I used to watch some of the televised performances he used to do when I was a kid… Of course, he stopped doing televised performances a while ago, but nonetheless it was one of my favorite things to watch.

It’s a great loss to the world to lose such a talented and unique man

  2. Today I was reading Time magazine (I guess it was a few weeks old) and on one of the pages, they had a tribute to Marcel Marceau. They simply used four pictures of him performing different actions. It was really cool, I thought.
